Drunk guy goes on a rampage at Cleveland Brown's Tailgate

Wow, take it easy there, almost-naked man!  This is NOT the way to tailgate!

Take it easy with the booze if you can't handle it!

West Virginia's not far from heaven

Wild and wonderful.

There isn't a state in the union that has more of an appropriate state motto as West Virginia or a town that encompasses said motto as well as Morgantown.

From the moment my friend and I arrived on campus, we knew we were in for a brand-new experience.

We parked at a church a little more than a mile from the stadium. Armed with nothing but a fifth of Seagrams 7 and a large Sierra Mist from a gas station, we soon began our trek to meet up with friends.

We reached their tailgate in the parking lot of an AT&T store with the campus perched atop a mountain on the horizon. The tailgating scene was pretty simplistic, mostly just beer and finger foods with some lawn chairs all held together by a truck bed or two.

Sam “The British Sooner” Deakin

CAMPUS CORNER — Surveying the sea of tents, fans and crimson Saturday afternoon at Lindsey and Asp streets, Sam Deakin‘s eyes shined and the smile could not be erased from his face. That’s been the norm this week for the 26-year-old who calls himself on Twitter the “British Sooner.”

He’s visiting Norman for the first time. Saturday night’s OU game, against Missouri, was his first at Owen Field.

“It’s not like this at home,” he said, pointing toward the pregame scene. “We don’t have the tailgating, the BBQ. We don’t have people setting up the day before games.

“And, the best part, when you walk up, people are so inviting. They want you to come hang out and tailgate with them.”

Yes, Deakin is from England. Yes, he’s a Sooners fan.

Bad Tailgaters: Warnings Issued To Aloha Stadium Tailgaters

Is it a case of no aloha at Aloha Stadium? Or much ado about nothing?

Warnings were issued to tailgaters at Saturdays game between the University of Hawaii and the University of California, Davis at Aloha Stadium. After the first game of the season on Sept. 3, some disgruntled fans lodged complaints about tailgaters taking up too many stalls in the parking lot.

Tailgaters are supposed to take up only one stall per vehicle, but some are not following the rules.

"The complaints were about people taking more than one stall, the vehicle not occupying the stall. Some people put up a tent in the stall next to their car and it's just a big party going on in there," said Aloha Stadium official Lois Manin.

Tailgate Party Do's and Don'ts

Grant Butler with The Oregonian wrote a nice piece on tailgating do's and don'ts.

DO pack warm dishes in insulated carriers to keep casseroles hot. And make sure coolers have plenty of ice or freezer packs.

DON'T skimp on the food. Make sure there's plenty for your party, and enough to share a little with your tailgate party neighbors -- that way you can try some of their food, too.

DO have plenty of nibbles and snacks for people to eat while they're waiting for grilled dishes to be ready.

DON'T do dumb things with your grill, like causing lighter-fluid flame-ups or dumping warm coals in a trash dumpster. Duh!

DO have non-alcoholic drinks available for people who don't imbibe, teenagers, and for anyone who's had one too many.

DON'T drink too much, and don't drink and drive. Ever.

DO wear your team's colors and show your school spirit.

DON'T angrily taunt fans of the other team. Tailgate parties are for fun, not fighting.

DO use environmentally friendly plates, such as bamboo, in place of paper plates. And if you have food in take-out boxes from the deli, they probably can be taken home for composting.

DON'T leave trash in the parking lot. Make sure you have enough garbage bags, and take your trash home with you.

DO dress appropriately. A long, chilly morning in the parking lot followed by shivering in the stands is no fun. If it's cold, pack a scarf, mittens and a hat.

DON'T take your shirt off if it's hot, even if you've got a gym-honed body. No one wants to look at your six-pack abs while they're eating. That goes double if you've got a beer gut.

Tailgating Times  has a great article about the many different kinds of bottle openers that are available out there.

I was quite surprised at many of the cool designs.

True test of tailgating cooking: Bad weather

Anybody can tailgate in nice weather.    But the true test of a tailgater’s mettle is what sort of spread he or she can whip up in nasty weather, and, make no mistake, the weather Saturday at Fred G. Hughes Stadium on the Missouri Southern State University campus was nasty. It was cold, it was wet and bolts of lightning danced around the sky. Because of that, the number of tailgaters was down Saturday afternoon but their spirits were not.

“Eighteen years, rain or shine,” was how Jon Tupper responded with a smile from under a large canopy sheltering he and his guests from the elements when asked how many years he has been serving up food for family and friends prior to MSSU football games.

Tupper, a former MSSU football standout and current member of the team’s radio broadcast crew, talked about tailgating from a perch near his massive smoker grill. While he talked he scooped a spicy grilled fajita mixture and placed it into a soft flour tortilla and handed it to Krystal Coy. He then handed another tortilla filled with the grilled steak, peppers and onions mixture to Austin Gilbert.

Coy and Gilbert, members of the MSSU cheerleading squad were sampling the tailgate fare as part of their duties as judges in a school-sponsored tailgate contest.

“Winner,” Gilbert said after taking a big bite of his fajita.

From underneath another canopy, Bruce Anderson took the lid off of a stockpot sitting on a gas-fueled flame and stirred a mixture of corn on the cob, potatoes, onions, lemons and sausage. In a few minutes, Anderson would add six pounds of shrimp to the stockpot to make a warm and savory shrimp boil.

Anderson said his tailgating group is made up almost entirely of Lionbackers, the MSSU athletics booster club. While Anderson oversaw the shrimp boil, other members of the group munched on chips and salsa and grilled chicken wings. Anderson said he and the other folks who put their pre-football game menus together always try to have a main dish to go with the more traditional tailgate fare like wings and brats.

“Sometimes we do chili or a fish fry,” he said.

Steve Allgood, who was helping Anderson, said there are usually four or five people who handle the cooking at the tailgates and that, in addition to the main dishes, snack items like beef sticks, cheddar cheese and peanuts were available for tailgaters to dive into.

And, while the food took center stage at a tailgate, both groups said that getting together with friends before MSSU football games is what real tailgating is all about.

Tupper, in fact, said he usually doesn’t eat much when he’s dishing out his tailgate favorites. His fajitas, for example, don’t really appeal to him.

“I don’t like the peppers,” he said.

What he does like is watching other people enjoy his food.

“That’s what it’s  all about,” he said.
